Among steppe fields and massive glaciers, on the shores of the Argentino Lake and the foot of the Cerro Calafate, lies the charming tourist town of El Calafate. It is a city known around the world for its proximity to the Glacier National Park, just 80 kilometers, created in 1937 to preserve this unique ecosystem in the world where rapid rivers, cold lakes and recognized hills (El Chalten, for example) make a landscape of great value. This heavenly spot was declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1981.

El Calafate, also known as the Glacier National Capital, offers a number of museums and experiences directly linked to these magnanimous frozen structures (with the Perito Moreno Glacier as the star) that are part of what is known as “ice fields” in the mountainous southern tip of our continent.

The adventure of traveling the icy waters of the southern shore of the Argentino Lake is renewed aboard the unique cruises that offer the possibility of sleeping inside the national park, and enjoying the tranquility of this natural environment.

With ice walls of about 60 meters high (216.5 ft) on average, the Upsala and Perito Moreno Glaciers are two of the main attractions of the region, as well as the Spegazzini with an area of 66 km2 (7.1042+ft2) and a front to up 135 meters (442.9 ft), the highest in the park.

The ride known as “The Spirit of the Glaciers” has ports in different strategic locations of each place in order to observe closely the flora and fauna that inhabit the lake, and allows you to learn a little more about the evolution and importance of these impressive ice walls.

Glaciarum, the Museum of Patagonian Ice, which is located 6 kilometers from El Calafate shows the amazing sound of the Perito Moreno landslides.

These are some of the proposals in the museum, which is equipped with the latest technology dedicated to exploring and revealing scientific facts while caring for the glaciers.

The GlacioBar is one of the most-visited attractions of the Glaciarium Museum. For its constant temperature of 10°C below zero (14°F), it is only permitted to remain in the bar for 25 minutes.
