Salta province is located in the Northwest of Argentina. It is surrounded by three countries: Chile, Paraguay and Bolivia; and by other six provinces: Jujuy, Tucuman, Chaco, Catamarca, Santiago del Estero and Formosa.

Salta is known as “La Linda” (The Beautiful One), because of its amazing scenery together with astonishing geographical diversity.

Salta’s geography encompasses the aridity of Puna in the west, as well as subtropical forests, mountains, valleys, and gorges in the northeast.

It is precisely in one of those valleys, “Valle de Lerma” (The Valley of Lerma) that the city of Salta is located.

The weather is temperate during the whole year due to its altitude, 1200 above sea.

The City of Salta is known for its Hispanic architecture, characterized by single-story houses as well as narrow streets, and sidewalks highlighted by the green of the surrounding hills.

A tour around the city will allow people to discover museums, churches and big old houses that were built during the colonial period.

The beautiful climate, a peaceful and relaxed life-style, and friendliness of the people turn Salta into an unforgettable and unique place.

The 9th of July Square: where Hernando de Lerma founded the City of Salta in 1582.

Inside the Cathedra are situated the images of the Lord and Virgin of the Miracle, the patron of Salta, together with the mortal remains of general Guemes who was a hero of the war of independence. The place where these remains are buried is called The Pantheon of the Glories of the North.

Maradona, Messi and the South Africa World Cup 2010

Sunday, June 27th, 2010

The world stops. Over 6.000 million people from 5 continents will be waiting. The celebration of football is about to begin.

This sporting even is held once every four years since 1930 -except in 1942 and 1946 due to the Second World War – after a hard classification in which 200 nations participate, only 32 countries manage to get in, drive by the same passion, the same objective: to become the best team in the world. To win.

♦ Ranking of winners of the FIFA World Cup:

Brazil is the most successful team with 5 victories.

Italy, the current champion, won 4 trophies.

Germany achieved vitctory 3 times.

Argentina and Uruguay have won 2 times.

England and France have been champions just once.

♦ Maradona and the goal of the century

Mexico was the host country of the World Cup in 1986. Argentina moved forward and no team could stop her, mostly because of Diego Armando Maradona´s talent. In the last quarter, the Argentinian team was confronted by England, one of its most traditional rivals, especially after the Malvinas War in 1982.

The match stood out for two of the most remembered goals in the history of football. Maradona scored a goal with his hand (known as “the hand of God”), and the other he  advanced 62 (203 ft)  meters in only 10 seconds, leaving 6 English players behind, before he scored the famous “Goal of the century”

The final match was between Germans and Argentinians in the Estadio Azteca before over 110.000 spectators.

In Mexico ´86 Diego Armando Maradona received the Golden Ball award and in Italy ´90 he received the Bronze Ball award.

♦ Messi, the best football player

Lionel Andrés Messi, commonly known as Leo Messi, is an Argentine footballer, who currently plays for Barcelona Football Club (popularly knows as Barça) and the Argentine national team. Considered as one of the best football players of his generation and frequently cited as the world’s best contemporary player, Messi has received several Ballon d’Or and FIFA World Player of the Year nominations by the age of 21 and won both by the age of 22.

♦ Maradona and Messi… Is it just a coincidence?

During the 2006/2007 season, Lionel Messi scored two goals which were very similar to Diego Armando Maradona´s scored goals againts England in the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.

During a Copa del Rey semi-final against Getafe, Leo Messi beat the same number of players (6 including the goalkeeper) ran for about 62 metres (203 ft) and scored the second goal for his team. The world’s sports press drew comparisons with Maradona’s famous “Goal of the Century”.

Because of his playing style and ability he was compared to football legend Diego Maradona, who himself declared Messi his “successor”.
